Dollar Bin (Not So) Splurge of the Week:The Raven(2012)

By Eric Polk-
If you've listened to Dollar Bin Horror Radio over the past few weeks, you may have noticed an ongoing argument between Rhonda and Brandon regarding the decline in the quality of John Cusack's recent work. To put it mildly, these tete-a-tetes between my two co-hosts almost goes into Jerry Springer territory.

Dollar Bin Splurge of the Week:The Woman in Black(2012)

By Eric Polk-
Child actors attempting to break out into adult roles have been a mixed bag. For every Kurt Russell, you have a Macaulay Culkin. For every Drew Barrymore, you have a Lindsay Lohan. Now the time has come for Daniel Radcliffe to make his transition from Harry Potter to grown-up. How does he do?

Dollar Bin Horror "Why did I plunk down good jack?" Splurge of the Week:The Devil Inside(2012)

By Eric Polk-
As you can tell from the heading, The Devil Inside, the #1 movie of the week is weak, very weak. Ok not very weak, but it's that old cat that has a teensy bit of fight left in it but nothing else.

(Not So) Splurge of the Week: The Thing

***WARNING I was lucky enough to get passes to an early screening of the film, so this review may contain some spoilers. I will try to be as discrete as possible.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish. The Thing serves as a prelude to John Carpenter's classic 1982 film of the same name

Dollar Bin (Not So) Splurge of the Week:Rise of the Planet of the Apes(2011)

By Eric Polk-
I know this isn't a horror film, but I figure since Brandon reviewed the tedious Inception and Rhonda gave her take on the not-seen-by-me Jackass 3-D, I felt I could get away with one non-horror movie review this year on this site.

Dollar Bin Splurge of the Week:Super 8(2011)

By Eric Polk-
From the rare slice of Americana known as the drive-in, I saw the latest from das wunderkind director, J.J.Abrams. Super 8 is a tale set in a fictional Ohio town(in actually, Weirton, WV, a town I live twenty minutes away from). A group of middle-school kids, one of whom had recently lost his mother in a steel mill accident, are in the midst of shooting a homemade zombie film when suddenly, a truck crashes into a train and all proverbial hell breaks loose.

Dollar Bin Splurge of the Week: The Rite (2011)

By Eric Polk of The Audio Descent podcast-
Finally! I've watched a GOOD horror movie. Though, in reality, The Rite, is more psychological thriller then blood and guts.

Directed by Mikael Hafstrom, and based on a novel The Rite:The Making of a Modern Exorcist by Matt Baglio. This movie inevitably will be compared to The Exorcist, but it does hold its own.

(Not So) Splurge Of The Week : SAW 3D

I wanted to love this, I really did. But when 3D ticket prices are $14 a pop and this is supposed to be the end of one of my favorite horror franchises...it better be really fucking good. Unfortunately, SAW 3D was just OK.

Lets get the first thing out of the way, save your money and see this film in 2D. So far, I've seen 4 films in 3D and I conclude it's all bullshit to get you to pay more money. Sure, a few times out of the films something looks pretty cool in 3D, but not enough to cover the extra money I shelled out, no sir you keep your 3D to yourself.

(Not So) Splurge of the Week: My Soul to Take

By Eric Polk
Before I begin my review, I would like to congratulate DBH's Lord and Master, Ms. Rhonda Kachur on one year of what is, in my biased opinion, the greatest horror website on the net today. I am so proud of her and I'm glad to be lending a hand to this kick-ass site!

My Soul to Take-
This movie should be retitled Your Money to Take. It is a crying shame that someone equipped with some of the greatest horror movie talents, director Wes Craven, could create dreck such as this. Your story is as follows, in Riverton, Massachusetts, where Sarah Plankov, who is nine months pregnant with a baby boy, is watching the news that the Riverton Ripper's death toll now been added up to seven as security footage at a parking garage shows the killer stabbing a teenage girl, and, for the first time, the police have identified the weapon: a pocket knife with the word "vengeance" marked on the blade. Meanwhile, her husband, Abel Plankov (Raul Esparza), is finishing up a little rocking horse for his newborn child. As he's going back up stairs, he trips, and finds the ripper's knife underneath the stairs. While Sarah goes to sleep, Abel calls Dr. Blake (Harris Yulin), his psychologist, (where it's revealed that Abel has a dissociative identity disorder. He does not remember killing anyone of the seven kids dead, and he has kept his "D.I.D." a secret from his wife and his 3-year old daughter, Leah.) He tells Dr. Blake that he is losing it again, his family does not know about his DID, and he needs his help. Immediately afterward, Dr. Blake calls the police.

Splurge Of The Week : Jackass 3D

***Mild Spoiler Alerts in this review***
The gang is back with all new jokes, gags, and disturbing stunts. Ok, so it's not a horror film...but I just HAD to post on it. I was raised watching Jackass. I've seen almost every episode, watched every film (except 2.5, which I REALLY want to buy), and have been a huge fan the whole way through. So me personally, I was expecting a hell of a lot from the 10th anniversary of the show. Was I dissapointed? Hell no!

Splurge of the Week:Devil

By Eric Polk of anotherdescentinto.blogspot.com

To be honest, I had alot of reservations about seeing this M.Night Shyamalan-produced film. I'm not the biggest fan of his work, other than the obvious The Sixth Sense. Yet, this is a current horror movie, and I feel it's one of my duties at DBH to bring to you, The Reaplings, reviews of recent films as well as my Netflix views. So with that disclaimer out of the way...

The Slumber Party Massacre - Splurge of the Week

By: Brandon Sites http://bigdaddyhorrorreviews.com

Russ Thorn has just escaped from the local asylum. You see Russ has a fetish for power drills and teenage girls. So when some teenage girls have a slumber party for old times sack, it's rather unfortunate that this looney decides to crash the party along with some lustful teenage boys. The Slumber Party Massacre is one of those films that appears dated, yet has gotten better over the years even gaining some minor classic status in the slasher sub-genre.

Sorority House Massacre - Splurge of the Week

By: Brandon Sites of http://bigdaddyhorrorreviews.com/

With The Slumber Party Massacre collection about to be re-released, I thought it was a fitting time to look back at this rip-off from the very same producer, Roger Corman, as Massacre. This one also manages to ripoff Halloween too.

Piranha 3D - Splurge of the Week

By: Brandon Sites of www.bigdaddyhorrorreviews.com

Let's not beat around the bush. Going into Piranha 3D one doesn't expect social commentary on what drives Spring Breakers to do the crazy things they do, deep meaningful messages on the human condition, or a biting examination on the politics of being in the police force. What one expects is gore, nudity, a fast pace, some occasional bits of comedy, and a bunch of killer piranha eating people to death. With that in mind, Piranha 3D delivers on all accounts as it tells the story of a sudden underwater tremor, at Lake Victoria, that sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating piranha who eat up anything in their way including thousands of college kids partying on the lake for Spring Break. Also, in the meantime sheriff Elizabeth Shue must rescue her family who is stuck on a sinking ship.

Inception - Splurge of the Week

By: Brandon Sites - Make sure to sign up for my giveaway of the film Sutures
 http://www.bigdaddyhorrorreviews.com/2010/07/who-wants-to-win-free-copy-of-sutures.html

I know. I know. It isn't horror, but I figured most people would appreciate a review of this film. Leo and company are a group of thieves who invade the dreams of high profile figures in order to steal info. from them. However, their latest client wants them to implant a memory into the son of a energy heavyweight so that he will dissolve the company. Did the film make complete and utter sense throughout? No, not really, but who cares? When you have as much striking imagery or breath taking visuals as this film had it really doesn't matter. Then you have that giant cast including the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Lukas Haas, and many more familiar faces to keep you entertained. Even at a 150+ minutes, there is always something happening to keep you on the edge of your seat. That could be buildings falling apart at a whim, guns ablazing, plot twists galore, award worthy special effects that will probably be immated for a long time to come, emotional resonance with the film's characters- the list just goes on and on. The only complaint I had about this film is the film's few final seconds that felt like a bit of a cheat, though it certainly got the auidence talking. That is only a minor complaint in a film that runs 2.5 hours+ and manages to provide one the best adrenaline rushes, film wise, that has been seen in awhile though. Highly recommanded.

Predators - Splurge of the Week

By: Brandon Sites of http://www.bigdaddyhorrorreviews.com/
Group of elite soliders with a wimpy doctor in tow are placed in the middle of a foreign jungle as the prey for a group of alien predators.

Reboot of the popular, though generally uneven, Predator franchise. The cast brings some much needed edge to their roles with Adrien Brody having one of his better roles since The Pianist, but lacks a presence as commanding as Arnold Scchwarzenegger in the original. Exciting, but drags at times which Alien vs. Predator- Requiem certainly didn't. Has some heart stopping suspense, but this element isn't as strong as the original. There is some humor, but that cheapens the overall effect of the movie. The score which is overbearing and over the top at times reminds one of a B movie. The predators find all kinds of carnage to get invovled in, but it doesn't have the same impact or chilling quality of the original. The predators have a new design (though the classic predator appears for the first time since the original), but they lack the innovation of the alien/predator hybrid of AVP-Requiem or the mysterious quality of the original. An entertaining ride, but serves as a reminder of how other films in the franchise were better, especially the first film.
