Dollar Bin Film - "Suspiria"

A newcomer to a fancy ballet academy gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.
Thank god for yard sale movie boxes! Known as Dario Argento's masterpiece, this film is stunning to look at. The colors and set is absolutely stunning. The musical score by Goblin is beautiful. The first 15 minutes of the film are, in my opinion, the best opening of any film. Period. I do wish the ending was a bit longer and more detailed, but the simply fact that the look of the film is so beautiful gives this eerie feeling as you watch the death scenes, as if the beauty covers the evil. Every horror fan should see this at least once.

Dollar Bin Film - "The Vineyard"

Winemaker Dr. Elson Po (James Hong) fears that he is getting too old, so he uses the blood of his prisoners to make his world-famous wine. A group of young actors come to his mansion to audition for his purported "wine-making film." The seven guests soon find out the secret of his wine and must escape.
This film confused the hell outta me cause nothing is ever explained. What the bodies of the visitors have to do with the wine is never explained. Neither is why zombies rise on the island. Speaking of them, the zombie makeup is cheap as hell (I mean just look at the movie's poster...I can buy a better Halloween mask at Walmart!) and the film's acting and script are just hopeless. This is one of those really bad horror films that are kinda funny the first time you watch it, but I wouldn't waste another hour of my life watching it again. It sure as hell has enough cheese to go with Dr. Po's wine, but not the fancy cheese, more like Kraft.

Dollar Bin Film - "Howling II: Stirba - Werewolf Bitch"

A young girl whose sister was murdered by werewolves helps an investigator track down a gang of the beasts through the U.S. and Europe.
Christopher Lee himself has described this film as his own "personal embarrassment!". But it's one of those films that are so bad, it's kinda funny! I mean theres the exploding dwarf, the drunken werewolf orgy, and Christopher Lee wearing some ridiculously cool eighties sunglasses! And the scene where Sybil Danning strips her clothes off is shown 10, count em, 10 times again over the credits. The only thing worse than the script, acting, and camera work is the lighting...it's so dark, I'm not even sure this was a werewolf flick! If you like serious horror, this probably isn't for you. But if your into 80's cheese, and a little sleaze, pick this one up.

Dollar Bin Horror Spotlight - My Zombie Pin-up

My Zombie Pin-ups are the coolest Chick around. Sexy, Artistic...and dead. With amazing photos, beautifully done make up, and killer lingerie, the My Zombie Pin-up's calendar is one of the, if not the coolest, ones out there. I got a chance to interview Shalaco Sching, one of the co-creators along with Robyn Malter, about this killer work of art. My Zombie Pin-up are in the Dollar Bin Horror Spotlight.

Q: Where did the idea for my zombie pinups come from?

A: Lets just say that there was a lot of tequila involved.

Q: How did you get started?

A: First we did our research. We researched all the pinup artists and found that gil elvgren was the master of the genre. We quantified the things that made up a pinup: amazing hairstyle, well put together vintage outfits and an 'oh woops' moment that generally gravitated around a garment malfunction. After figuring out sort of the taxonomy of a pinup we set out and had conversations with experts in all of these fields. Next we took the same step with zombies. And then finally we married the two concepts.

Q: How do you find your models?

A: Most were fresh cadavers. We would take turns being glued to the police scanner a few days before the shoot. It is very important to get the model into their pose before rigamortis(this is spelled wrong) fully sets in. If we did not have what we came to call an 'abra-cadaver' moment we would simply go down to San Francisco's tenderloin and look for the freshest drug addict and pull the whole 'does this rag smell like ether to you?' bit.

Q: Where can people get the calendar and find out more?

A: You can get a calendar at http://www.myzombiepinup.com
You can see our inspiration here: http://www.myzombiepinup.com/2009/10/the-inspiration-behind-my-zombie-pin-ups/

Dollar Bin Film - "Firestarter"

A couple who participated in a potent medical experiment gain telekinetic ability and then have a child who is pyrokinetic.
I thought this movie adaption of the novel by Stephen King was decent. Drew Barrymore was great as Charlie, she disguises her ability to light fires with her anger through her cuteness. David Keith and Heather Locklear's performances weren't all that great, but carried everything along. The best parts of the movie were the special effect, which were wonderful and chilling, George C. Scott as the villain, god he was fucking evil!, and the score by Tangerine Dream, which suited the story perfectly. I do wish there was more of a build-up to the movie, but overall, it's an enjoyable watch.
