Dollar Bin Special Post:Eric's Top 5 Horror Remakes

By Eric Polk-
Horror Remakes. Why that phrase alone makes me wanna hit myself in the Spauldings with a steel mallet. Oh yes, this past decade, we horror fans have been inundated with everything from reheated Jason, Freddy, Night of the Demons, Prom Night, Amityville Horror, Texas Chainsaw Massacre....the list is bottomless.

Yet, through the midst of this celluloid dreck, I have been able to pull a few diamonds from the remake dung pile and, faithful to my promise on this past week's episode of DBHR, here are my five favorite horror remakes from 5 to 1.

5)Halloween-

Actually, it's the first half of this movie I like. I love that Rob Zombie gave us a legitimate, believable origin for Mr. Myers as opposed to The Curse of Michael Myers storyline they tried to pass off on us. After we see what makes Michael become a legendary killer, it goes downhill from there. Nevertheless, the first part is an A+.

4)Cat People-

The thing that makes a remake good is when it takes the original story and makes it its own. Certainly with the 1982 version, it turns the story into an almost sensual though incestuous tale.

3)I Am Legend-

I love the novel the movie is based. I love the first movie incarnation, The Last Man on Earth, starring Rhonda's boy, Vincent Price. I love this incarnation as well. IAL gives the story a modern spin and isn't a note-for-note remake. Very terrifying.

2)Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)-

What makes this remake as good as the original is the satire of the whole 70's Me Decade. It's certainly creepier and more intense the original and the ending is way more satisfying in  my view.

1)The Fly-

It's shame they probably won't pick director David Cronenberg to handle the directing duties of the impending remake of Carrie. His work in the 1986 remake of The Fly is above reproach. I mean, he took what was a B-movie and made into a deep, psychological tale of love, obsession, and, ultimately, sorrow.

There yins have it. I'm sure your list won't match mine, but that's why we have opinions!

You may have a heart attack, but I haven't seen it! LOL...seriously, I've never had the chance to view it. I'm sure it is a great remake. From what I've heard, it's a masterpiece!

Stop what you are doing, right now. Log of the computer. Order a pizza. Go out and buy the movie at Best Buy. Come back home with pizza ready. Pop the movie into the player and WATCH!!! You have not lived, until you've seen it.

Seriously, though, it's a good movie.
