Splurge Of The Week : Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill

Starting today, Dollar Bin Horror will have a new weekly feature called "Splurge of the Week" where I let you know what amazing horror movies, books, or collectibles are worth spending your money that you've been saving up for a rainy day on. Today's Splurge is the amazing debut novel by Joe Hill (son of the Great Stephen King)

"Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre: a cookbook for cannibals . . . a used hangman's noose . . . a snuff film. An aging death-metal rock god, his taste for the unnatural is as widely known to his legions of fans as the notorious excesses of his youth. But nothing he possesses is as unlikely or as dreadful as his latest discovery, an item for sale on the Internet, a thing so terribly strange, Jude can't help but reach for his wallet.

I will "sell" my stepfather's ghost to the highest bidder. . . .

For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man's suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. He isn't afraid. He has spent a lifetime coping with ghosts—of an abusive father, of the lovers he callously abandoned, of the bandmates he betrayed. What's one more?

But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost, no benign conversation piece. It's the real thing.

And suddenly the suit's previous owner is everywhere: behind the bedroom door . . . seated in Jude's restored vintage Mustang . . . standing outside his window . . . staring out from his widescreen TV. Waiting—with a gleaming razor blade on a chain dangling from one bony hand. . . . "

This is one of my favorite books. I have read it 3 times, and could read it again in a heartbeat. The imagery used is haunting. Theres even a scene about midway through the book that, to this day, gives me chills every time I read it. It has all the shock value of his father's books, but with his own voice. With this being his debut novel (he has a short story book out now called 20th Century Ghosts), I cannot wait to see what else Mr. Hill has in store for us readers. If theres one novel out there to spend your money on, this is it.

Dollar Bin Horror Spotlight - Bill Adcock

Bill Adcock was born in Buffalo, NY, where he's spent the ensuing 22 years. Bill has been a "Monster Kid" pretty much the entire time -- some of his earliest memories are of watching CLASH OF THE TITANS and some of the 1960s and 1970s Godzilla films on television, and of checking out every book on monster movies my local library had to offer. When he got to college, Bill initially studied to become a biologist, before realizing just how terrible he was at chemistry, at which point he switched majors to History. In May 2009, he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in History, which he hasn't quite been able to turn into a career just yet. For his awesome blog, Radiation-Scarred Reviews, Bill Adcock is in the Dollar Bin Horror Spotlight.

Q: How did you get started horror blogging?
A: Well, I'll be honest. It's not the prettiest of stories...In December 2008 I came to the realization that the relationship I was in was failing. Nothing catastrophic, but we were growing apart, and it was clear that it wouldn't last much longer. We were kind of clinging as long as we could...and I needed something to distract myself, to keep me from brooding about the impending break-up and being depressed. I stumbled across the horror review blog Bearded Weirdo Reviews and thought to myself, "I could do that." December 23rd I registered Radiation-Scarred Reviews on Blogger, and the rest, as they say, is history. RSR very quickly grew into a real joy in my life.

Q: Where did the Radiation theme come from?
The B-grade horror and science fiction films of the 1950s are what I kind of grew up on, and remain my favorite (and most familiar) sub genre of horror films. And generally, if the monster in those movies isn't from space, it was created by radiation from atomic testing. When I first started RSR, I was thinking I'd focus on these 1950s monster movies, but by the time I wrote my first review I recognized that that was really limited, and I very quickly expanded to low-budget horror cinema of all sorts.

Q: What has been your favorite review to date?
Oh jeez, that's a tough one...If you look at the reviews, there's a definite evolution. My earliest reviews have extremely long, detailed synopses, while more recent reviews have more detailed analysis, and I'm much happier with the look and tone of more recent reviews. If I had to pick just one review that I'm most happy with, probably either RE-ANIMATOR or THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD

Q: Whats coming up next for your blog?
If I could really predict that, I'd be cashing in on the lottery, hehe...but seriously? The only thing I can really say for certain is that I'll be reviewing ZARDOZ as a favor to my friend J.T., and reviewing the Vincent Price classic THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES, a film I've been putting off for way too long. Other than that, I'm looking to continue my trend of increasing scholasticism in my reviews. I've been studying film criticism as it relates to horror films, and I'm looking to incorporate that into my reviews without losing the sort of irreverent tone I've got.

I'm looking to build up my readership more, maybe make a few dollars off the site, meet some people (I'll be attending the horror convention Monster Mania 14 in March) and further entrench myself in the horror community. I've got a couple other ideas for RSR's future, but nothing I can really talk about just yet.

Dollar Bin Film - "Final Exam"

Psycho killer shows up on collage campus to slash up pretty co-eds and dumb jocks.
The first thing you must do when you see this film is leave your brain at the door! This is your typical cheesy, low budget 80's below par slasher movie, with bad acting, horrible acting, and college kids included. This film could have been good but it spends WAY too much time with its characters and totally forgets its a slasher flick. And the slashings aren't very good. I want at least a little gore with my slash! Over all this film isn't bad, isn't good, it's just there...and sometimes, thats worse than if it was just bad.

Special Dollar Bin Horror Preview: Eternal Death

With her long-awaited second marriage finally about to become a reality, acclaimed novelist Terry Bruckham is besieged with painful and terrifying memories. Those most closely associated with her are also assailed by disturbing dreams and obsessive thoughts. A sinister plan is being enacted in the Earth's Dreamlands, home to the sleeping and the Earthbound dead, as a troubled spirit wrestles with the warring pieces of his own psyche for the well-being or destruction of everything that exists. Discover the world beyond the wall of sleep and its marvelous residents, both good and evil.
Eternal Death: Lost Beneath the Surface is a amazing story. It combines a multitude of emotions, from the love felt between Terry and Elvin, to the torture and pain felt by Pelle, to the callousness of the Vampire who gave him that pain. This book combines elements of romance, horror, gothic themes, and sorrow into a 500 page novel that compels you to keep reading. It even has small snippets of the fictitious books written by the characters (the snippets are amazing themselves and I would love to see them made into full length novels or novellas).
*Currently, due to creative conflicts, Lily Strange has turned the Eternal Death series over to Rose LeMort and the book is being re-written When it it completed, an official review and interview of the revised version will be posted. Till then you can find out more at the author's website, www.lilystrange.com/

Dollar Bin Film - "House of the Dead"

A group of teens arrive on an island for a rave--only to discover the island has been taken over by zombies. The group takes refuge in a house where they try to survive the night.
The basic premise sounds like this film could have been good...coulda, shoulda, woulda this was some bullshit if I ever seen it! Horrible dialogue, half-assed plot, and video game scenes inserted into the film with shity game-styled camera work to match (who the fuck said "ok now instead of showing their gory death scene that people might enjoy watching, lets have them stop in mid air and just movie camera around them like 'Game Over".?) And on top of all that shittyness, the acting was like something outta a spanish soap! If you have seen this film, Im sorry. If you haven't, DON'T!

The Coolest Pic EVER From BJ-C of "Day of the Woman"

"Sending Deadly Kisses" sand art from BJ-C :)
BJ-C is officially the coolest girl ever! This is so sweet! Please check out her killer horror blog, Day of the Woman, by clicking here

Dollar Bin Film - "The Rage: Carrie 2"

A girl discovers she has the power to kill with her mind.
This movie should NEVER have been made. Let's forget the fact, if you can, that this is probably a sequel worse than the Blair Witch 2, and look at it as a stand alone film...if only it had a leg to stand on. The story has no build up at all, the writing just seems lazy as hell, and the camera work tries to hard to be exciting and fast. It just makes me nauseated. The acting is pretty much average too. Amy Irving reprises her role as Sue (apparently she has recovered from her temporary insanity and became the high school counselor...wtf?)...is she that desperate for work? Seriously for the love of King don't see this movie!!!!
Sending Deadly Kisses,
Rhonny Reaper

***I hope yall aren't getting annoyed with my side notes, but DBH just won ANOTHER award! JudyDee's Cemetary of Horror bestowed upon this blog the Awesome Site award :) a HUGE thanks!!!
