Five Dolla Holla - Case 39

Renee Zellweger stars as caring social worker finds her world turned upside down when she becomes the foster parent for a little girl. See, she was nearly murdered by her parents who believed she was a demon who was killing everyone they loved.

Renee Zellweger, what an intriguing actress with her distinctive look and distinctive voice. There seems like there is always something going on in her head. What is she thinking? What is she going to do? What words might she utter? There is a quality about her, to her, that makes her interesting, even a bit fascinating.

So any film that is lucky enough to cast her in a leading role is gonna be inherently interesting to a certain degree since she is an interesting presence to begin with. Case 39 is one of those films that has a solid cast, a solid story and solid production values. It starts out well enough with some skillfully done scenes of terror and shock. However, as the film progresses and the subtle nature of the demonic child turns into something more CGI inspired in the film's final third, that's when Case 39 loses its footing. It all gets a bit overwrought and silly as all creditability is tossed aside in favor of chase sequences and stunts. If it wasn't for Renee Zellweggar, this film would have fallen completely apart. She keeps it grounded as best as she can even when the story has gotten too silly. People have debated about wreather A list actors should even bother with horror films. Horror films can provide great showcase roles for any type of actor. So yes, A list stars should consider giving horror a try. However, in Renee Zellweggar's case she should have waited for either a script rewrite or she should have held out for something else to mark her return to the genre.
