Dollar Bin Horror Spotlight - The Reapers Are The Angels (Book Review)

Born into a crumbling society plagued by zombies, all 15-year-old Temple knows is to kill or be killed. When she is assaulted at a safe house, she murders her human attacker, Abraham Todd, and runs from his vengeful brother, Moses. Temple soon acquires a traveling partner, a slow mute by the name of Maury, and begrudgingly takes responsibility for his care, remembering a young boy she swore to protect but couldn't save. Fleeing Moses, the "meatskins," and her own battered conscience, Temple still finds moments of simple joy in the brutal world. Bell (a pseudonym for Joshua Gaylord, author of Hummingbirds) has created an exquisitely bleak tale and an unforgettable heroine whose eye for beauty and aching need for redemption somehow bring wonder into a world full of violence and decay.

This book is absolutley the opposite of what I expected to read; it was better. It's not your conventional horror book in the sense that it isn't all about blood thirsty zombies and bloody gory scenes, although there are violent and revetting zombies through out. It's much more than a simple zombie tale for the fact that it touches not only your heart when you read it, but your soul. What the main character, who is only 15, has to go through is both terrifying and heart wrenching. She was born into this world of the undead and even with all this horror around her, she seems to have such a positive attitude and her character is simply inspiring. All of the characters in fact are detailed and the way they are written, you really feel for everything they go through. It's fast paced, strangely uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time, and written in almost a poetic tone. By the end of the book, you will feel grateful for all you have, even if it ain't much. The best part of the book for me is that it didn't just leave you with that tingle on the back of your neck, but it made you sit and think long after the story had finished. I highly recommend this book for zombies fans who are looking for something more. Check it out HERE
