Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments:#83-The Others(2001)

By Eric Polk-
Recently, DBH lord and mistress, Rhonny Reaper, posted a manifesto in which one of her tenets was a return to an old-fashion, less-gory style of horror film. With 2001's The Others, I don't think she'll be disappointed.

Directed by Alejandro Amenabar and starring actress Nicole Kidman(still with whacky, madcap Tom Cruise at this point), the film takes place post-WWII  in the island of Jersey(no kids, not the Snooki/The Situation Jersey, I'm talking the island just off of England),  Grace Stewart is a mother who lives with her two small children in a remote country house. The children, Anne  and Nicholas, have an uncommon disease characterized by photosensitivity (a so their lives are structured around a series of complex rules designed to protect them from inadvertent exposure to sunlight.

The arrival of of three servants at the house—an aging nanny and servant named Mrs. Bertha Mills an elderly gardener named Mr. Edmund Tuttle and a young mute girl named Lydia coincides with a number of odd events, and Grace begins to fear that they are not alone.

I enjoy horror films that makes a character question their beliefs, their little box they've grown to believe is the truth. The Others certainly has that. There is a dark atmosphere here that is missing in alot of horror films today. The scares are minimal, the blood non-existant, but the twist certainly makes up for the movie's shortcomings which also includes its too-slow pace. If you're a fan of The Changling, you'll like this movie. If you're fan of a naked Nicole Kidman, you won't like this movie.
