I am not the biggest fan of remade horror films. In my opinion, you learn nothing new about your favorite characters. Remakes involving Jason, Freddy, Crazies, Stepfathers, and Sororities where nothing more than a waste of time. One notable exception is Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween. With that 2007 film, we are plunged into the depths of the psyche that is one Michael Myers. I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of that film so my hopes were quite high for his 2009 sequel.
In it, jumping ahead one year, Halloween II, follows Laurie Strode as she deals with the aftermath of the previous film's events, Dr. Loomis who is trying to capitalize on those events by publishing a new book that chronicles everything that happened, and Michael Myers as he continues his search for Laurie so that he can reunite with his sister.
Of course this film is not a frame-by-frame remake of the '81 version., but does, at least for about ten minutes takes place in a hospital so I appreciated the nod to that. What I enjoyed where the visions Myers had about his mother and himself as a boy. It gives this movie a greater depth. While the symbolism(the white horse) was a bit heavy-handed, the gore and the gross-out(the dog) more than made up for it. Sadly, like most horror movies, the ending bit the big one. All of this rich, nuanced film goes to hell in the last ten minutes which leads me to believe Dimension Films was truly out of money at that time.
I do recommend this film if you're a fan of the franchise, just don't expect a home run here. 8/10

I'm glad to see someone showing this film some love. Yeah, the ending did kinda suck, but the rest of the film was pretty damn cool, in my opinion.
This might be the first positive review I've seen for this movie. I've purposefully avoided it because of the bad reviews everywhere else I go. Maybe if it comes on TV some time down the road, I'll give it a chance.

I don't really see why it got the amount of flack it has received. I can buy that it's not a straightforward piece of hack-n-slash, thus turning off folks but I did genuinely enjoy this film. Then again, I didn't read reviews prior to seeing this.
