Splurge Of The Week : Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
" 'It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.' So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to read."
Were do I begin on why you should read this book!?!....
1) The mash-up is amazingly done. I still wanna know how the hell he did it.
2) It has fucking Zombies! I'll read almost anything with zombies.
3) It has kickass, strong women who fight the zombies better than men.
4) The mash-up is done by Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the kickass book How To Survive A Horror Movie (if you haven't read that one yet, go to the bookstore NOW). BTW...he also wrote the big Book of Porn.
4) Again, Zombies
If you like films such as Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead, your gonna love this book. Hell, If you're literate you'll like this. If you're a zombie...you probably won't. And If you like to save money, even on a splurge, you can find this book at Walmart for $9 instead of the $13 list price!

I haven't read this yet, but the other half of KinderScares (my dear husband) would undoubtedly beg to differ. He couldn't get through it and said it was unmercifully boring.
Proof that Pride and Prejudice just isn't for men (even with added zombie goodness)? Hmmm.
Interesting. I was trusting his opinion, but now I'll have to go and read it for myself. :)

Yes! This book is awesome! I love the way they did it!
I purchased this book for a friend, she is a big P&P fan. She was not as amused as I had hoped, but she isn't a big horror fan. I, however, was completely amused when her then-boyfriend picked it up and started reading it with fervor.
It also spawned another mash-up Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters! =] Combining regency romance and horror, which is amazing to me!
If you liked this one, check out Breathers: A Zombie's Lament - I blogged about it today. Hilarious!
Honestly this book felt alittle cut and paste, despite the fact it did have several great moments, aswell as giving a reason for the army being stationed so nearby, which was never covered in the book and I loved the reworking that Darcy got, so that he is now a swave Zombie slayer.
Still not sure were Ninja's fit into things, much like the constant mentions of the martial arts training, the sisters have gone through, which just felt out of place and kind of clumsy.
"Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters" was a stonger book, mainly because of the original material blending better with the new material. Still the prequel to this book is out this year, so will be intresting to see how that turns out.
First, I love the blog!
I've wanted this one for awhile, but it's never been around the bookstores when I check, but I did read Sense & Sensibility and Sea Monsters, and it was pretty great so I'm looking forward to reading this one!
