This is one of my favorite sub-genres that was included in the 30 day horror challenge. A more appropriate question would be "what horror themed TV series did I not like?". So many good ones to pick from. I grew up watching The Hitchhiker which always featured scummy characters getting their just deserts. Or there was Tales From the Crypt which featured slick, old school styled stories, but updated them for modern times with gore and violence. And who didn't just love The Cryptkeeper?!? Even Freddy Krueger got in on the action with a short lived series entitled Freddy's Nightmares which suffered from inconsistency. I grew up when the horror themed TV series was at its peak with a wide variety of shows to choose from. However, the series I picked reflects upon me as a kid growing up. So I give you.....
Goosebumps - Goosebumps was this huge book series back when I was a kid. While I was too cool to be reading, I have to admit I went running out to the local book store every once in a while waiting for the next volume of this series to come out. One Halloween they announced that they were adapting The Haunted Mask, one of the entries in the Goosebumps series, into a TV special. I was floored over. After watching the show, I was hooked. I wanted more. Unfortunately, I would have to wait and wait and wait some more. Originally, Fox just did a random adaptation here and there before they decided to make Goosebumps a full time TV series. Originally it aired on Friday, but they changed it up to Saturday mornings. Now mind you, I always slept in on Saturday so it really put a cramp in my style having to wake up in time for this series every Saturday morning. It was worth it, however! It was just got such a thrill seeing some of my favorite childhood books being there on my television screen for me to watch. While every once in a while, the series missed the mark, it hit far more often then it missed. I loved Attack of the Jack-o-Lanterns. Trick or Treating, Halloween, and a wicked plot twist. What wasn't there to love? The Haunted Mask Part II actually outdid the original! And who didn't love a good old Night of the Living Dummy entry. They also introduced Ultimate Goosebumps which had some episodes that weren't based off the books. If you can ever track down a DVD of Scary House, I would recommend you do. For me as a kid, it was indeed scary. Another favorite happened to be the Invasion of the Body Snatchers themed story set at a military school. Anyway, to this day, Goosebumps is a series that I still watch. I buy the DVD's every year and I even watch them every once in a while. It had characters that related to me as a kid only in a horror series so that's what made it extra special.
PS: It's fun seeing a whole new generation discover the books and the series.
My 13 year old brother is hooked.
