Demons (1985) |
Once you starting talking about the powers of Hell or satanism, two films instantly come to mind. First off, The Exorcist, however we're saving that for another day, another time, another category. Then there is Angel Heart which had a vivid atmosphere, effective performances and one of the most talked about sex scenes not just in horror film history, but in film history period! Still, it's not my favorite. My favorite goes to a film that has the power to scare me 20+ years after initially seeing it. It's one of those films that gives me goosebumps and makes my hairs stand at end. So I give you.....
Demons - A group of theater patrons find themselves trapped inside a new theater showcasing a horror film, but the evil from the film starts to leap off the screen turning the patrons into bloodthirsty demons who in turn kill off the remaining patrons. With Demons, the film is almost immediately scary as a character is seemingly chased around this labyrinth like setting. As the characters place themselves into the theater, there is an ever growing sense of fear, because you know something bad is going to happen and everyone is helpless to prevent it. As the patrons start to turn into Demons, that fear is amped up. Part of what makes Demons so effective is the film's use of tight, claustrophobic like settings. It brings a higher degree of urgency and immediacy to the situation the characters are placed in. It makes the situation all the more dire. That, along with stories that the characters talk about involving hell on earth involving demons and the prophecies of Nostradamus, tap into this inherent fear that you've always kinda had that's in the back of your mind that you don't think about unless it is brought up. Demons milks its theater setting & the use of tall tales & legends to create this vivid nightmare in which our characters are stuck in. Demons is one of those rare films in which the tension and terror of what is happening on screen is tangible. Demons is undoubtedly one of the scariest films ever made.
