Dollar Bin Horror Spotlight - sWitch
Barbara Ducharme's got a plan: she's going to stitch her fraying family back together with a little help from...Satan. Mired in an homogeneous suburban hell where happiness is always one impulse purchase away, what's a housewife to do when her frozen marriage refuses to thaw, and her children's lives are falling apart before they've even had a chance to begin? A trip to a run-down, mountain home she's inherited from a mysterious relative sounds like an ideal way to break the routine, and break the news she's been dabbling in the dark side. Then they showed up--three masked assailants on their own little adventure filled with terror, torment and torture. Of course, there's no accounting for the toll years of family dysfunction has taken on their victims. For Barbara, the brutal assault may be just the thing to bring her twisted family together. For the intruders, it could be wrong family, wrong time.
This has to be one of my favorite novels that I've reviewed so far. Not only does it take our perception of a "normal" family and turn it on it's side, it completely flips it around and takes it to a whole new level of dark humor. Barbabra, the main character in this twistedley delightful tale, uses her knowledge of the occult not only to give the intruders exactly what they deserve, but to bring her family closer together. It reminds me a bit of The Munsters or The Addams Family, but even darker and crazier. The book has a great pacing through out and each character is brought to life by Scott's detailed and descriptive narratives. I think my favorite part of the novel is that no matter who reads it, everyone can relate in one way or another to the family and their struggles in this book. It will remind you of an uncle, an aunt, or hell even your own parents! While on the surface it's dark and funny, underneath is a heart warming tale of family love...and Satan.
