Dollar Bin Film - "The Monster Maker"

A mad scientist injects his enemies with acromegaly virus, causing them to become hideously deformed.
What is it with monkeys and pre-1960 monster movies? I mean, they don't even need it in this film, but they got one just for good measure or some shit like that. I don't get it. But other than that, this film was quite enjoyable. It delivers the sci-fi camp, the low budget B-movie feel, and the old school plot twists. Overall, not a bad watch!

P.S. if you REALLY broke, This film has fallen into the public domain and can be freely downloaded from http://www.archive.org/details/The_Monster_Maker

Because everything's better with monkeys? I'm not sure, but it seems like during this era guys in gorilla suits were everywhere -- movies, TV, hawking used cars...a number of guys even rose to prominence as gorilla actors, including Ray Corrigan, George Barrows, and Bob Burns.

If you ever get a chance (seeing as how it's out of print) pick up a copy of "It Came From Bob's Basement," Bob Burns' recollections of years of work in the horror/fantasy/sci-fi film world, as well as hundreds of pictures of memorabilia in his collection -- Ro-Man's head from ROBOT MONSTER, the silver cane handle from THE WOLF MAN, you name it, if Forrest J. Ackerman didn't have it, Bob Burns does. He has a great story in there about playing a gorilla for a Halloween episode of "I Love Lucy"

The Monster Maker sounds like it was originally intended as a vehicle for Rondo Hatton, who really did suffer from acromegaly. Glenn Strange was pretty good in it though.
